Last night I treated myself to a room at Motel West. I had biked 100miles, in temps up to 95, I arrived late, & was wacked.
This morning, I shared a breakfast table with a fellow who lectures on building efficiency at Boston University. With my dabbles into domestic property & energy efficiency, & his keenness to know more of UK building solutions, we spent a good hour exchanging information & I came away smarter for it.
With Jackson only 100miles away & expected on Sunday, I decided to stick around Idaho Falls, do some work, explore & relax.
The city is huge for these parts, pop. 61,000 & relatively low altitude 4,100ft. It sits on the Snake River, the one I’ll be following up tomorrow. The main, if not the only worthy feature of the place is the falls themselves. They are stunning &, with better town planning, could have been exploited far better than the narrow strip of green park given on either side of the river.

The Falls
“Historic” Downtown from what I saw, included buildings from early 1900’s on & are typical of the period but of little architectural merit. Also, the area is in decline & many premises standing empty. The action now is all along the brassy, ugly thoroughfares.
Early evening, I returned to my nice ac’d motel room, read my book, had a nice cup of English Breakfast tea with real milk & with the knowledge of a night in a comfortable bed – that’s what I call living!!
You deserve that comfy bed . Oscar and Charlie sat with me and read all your posts over the last few days ! It sounds total punishment with the heat but your reward is meeting all these interesting and lovely people ! You are lucky in that respect ! Take care lots of love LINDA xx

Hi Linda, Oscar & Charlie,
Thanks for the message guys!
Its. Great adventure. There are bits of course but lots of good stuff. Travel adventures take you in to other worlds, You learn how to survive, see how others live, meet great people & get a different perspective on the world. Only downside is a little discomfort which is not a bad trade off really.

Well I’m keeping up but mainly lost for words at the enormity of the task in the heat! Talking of energy efficiency, was introduced to Kate Rawles, The Carbon Cycle, Crossing the Great Divide, by a keen cyclist, take it you’ve read it? I’m looking forward to your emerging book….!?!? From her photo it looks like you could advise her on a minimum luggage strategy.

Yes, heat (& water) are definitely the two things to overcome – climbs & head winds then become manageable. I didn’t know of Kate Rawles’s book but will check it out. As for my book, a number of people have asked the same. Unfortunately, what little talent I have lay elsewhere. Plus, the documented misadventures of an ageing man cycling alone in the hottest states in America in the height of summer could be easily used to register me as completely insane.
